JIBC extends Advanced Care Paramedic program
ACP expansion enables students to study closer to home
JIBC’s School of Health Sciences is pleased to announce an expansion of the Advanced Care Paramedic Program (ACP) to Victoria in September 2012 and Kelowna in 2013 pending approval. The regional offerings will be delivered in parallel with the main ACP offering at JIBC’s New Westminster campus.
The expansion was initiated in response to feedback from students around the province that the financial and personal impact of relocating to New Westminster was a barrier to registering for the ACP Program.
In response to this feedback from students, JIBC approached the Ministry of Advanced Education for approval to deliver the ACP program in small regional cohorts, in conjunction with our main intake at the New Westminster Campus. In February 2012, JIBC received approval for a small cohort at JIBC’s Victoria campus, starting in September 2012. Subsequently, the Ministry also approved regional delivery of the ACP program at JIBC’s Okanagan campus in central Kelowna, starting in September 2013.
The early application period (September 4 - October 12, 2012) for the 2013 ACP program will allow students to confirm their seats, while continuing to complete prerequisite courses.
“This initiative helps to provide easier access to the program for residents from outside the Lower Mainland,” said JIBC ACP Program Manager Rick Wong. “Regional delivery eliminates travel and accommodation costs over the 18-month program and, just as important, students are able to study closer to home, with support from family and friends.”
Students registered in these regional offerings will complete the program in parallel with a cohort based at the New Westminster campus. Some program components, such as lectures, will be delivered via webcast, and classes from all regions will be combined for online work and discussions. Components such as simulations, exams, and practicum will be delivered regionally. The need for travel to the Lower Mainland during the program will be minimized and limited to an initial orientation and a few specialized site visits.
ACP Information Sessions will be held at the Kelowna campus on:
- July 26, 2012: 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm
- July 27, 2012: 9–11 am
A new ACP Applicant’s Guide, a collaborative project between JIBC and the British Columbia Ambulance Service, provides potential ACP Program applicants with information to consider when applying for the program. The guide answers the most commonly asked questions about program prerequisites, student readiness, and employment considerations.
The ACP program focuses on themes including: clinician skills, inter-professional collaboration, leadership, life-long learning, community-based emergency health, and science and delivery of EMS.
