JIBC honours lives and service of fallen Fredericton police officers

Flags at all JIBC campuses at half-mast to honour the dedication and sacrifice of Constables Robb Costello and Sara Burns

Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) is flying flags at half-mast at all JIBC campuses to honour two Fredericton Police Force officers who died in the line of duty on Aug. 10.

On Aug. 10, Constables Lawrence Robert Costello and Sara Burns were the first on scene to a report of shots fired at an apartment complex in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Upon their arrival, two civilians had already been shot and the suspect immediately opened fire on the police. Tragically, both the civilians and the two constables lost their lives.

Costello, 45, was a 20-year veteran of the Fredericton Police Force. He leaves behind his partner and four children.

Burns, 43, had been on the force for two years after serving as an auxiliary for two years prior. She leaves behind her husband and three children.

A regimental funeral will be held for the officers on Aug. 18.

“On behalf of everyone at JIBC, our deepest condolences go out to the Fredericton Police Force and the families, friends and colleagues of Constables Costello and Burns,” said Dr. Michel Tarko, President and CEO of JIBC. “Their dedication and sacrifice to keep the community safe will not be forgotten.”
