JIBC President Jack McGee announces his retirement
President McGee to continue in his role until September 30, 2012
After more than 11 years as President of the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC), Jack McGee has announced his retirement. President McGee has informed the JIBC Board of Governors of his intention to retire and will continue to serve until a successor is named and the transition to a new President is complete, no later than September 30, 2012.
McGee was appointed JIBC President in September 2000. During his tenure with the Institute, he has been a driving force in pursuing many facets of the Institute’s mandate, as envisioned in its enabling legislation. Led by his strategic vision, JIBC has expanded the foundational focus of the Institute on delivering training for justice and public safety professionals to providing opportunities to BC students and learners from around the world for life-long education that includes undergraduate and graduate certificates, diplomas, and degrees. JIBC’s capacity for leading and conducting applied research has also greatly expanded during his tenure, as has the fundraising activity of the JIBC Foundation, which he has served as a Foundation Board Director.
He has also presided over the expansion of the Institute’s infrastructure across the province, including the opening of new campuses in Chilliwack, Victoria, and Kelowna and the Dr. Donald B. Rix Public Safety Simulation Building at the New Westminster campus. Under his leadership, JIBC has also expanded partnerships and eLearning capability, enabling the Institute to deliver education and training in more than 175 communities across BC and to thousands of students who study online.
JIBC Board of Governors Chair Mary Manning described McGee’s service to the Institute as nothing short of exemplary. “It has been said that because of the exceptional work of our graduates, every day, everyone in BC benefits from the education and training delivered at JIBC. That is an extraordinary testament to the contribution made by Jack and the dedicated team he has nurtured at the Institute. His will be very difficult shoes to fill.”
“On behalf of the current and past members of the JIBC Board of Governors who have enjoyed the pleasure of working with President Jack McGee, I would like to thank Jack for his exceptional contribution to the growth and development of the Institute,” said Manning. “We all trust that he and his wife Donna, who has provided great support in all of the roles he has undertaken, will enjoy a long and happy retirement.”
Prior to his appointment at JIBC, McGee served as President of St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario and Dean of Science and Technology at George Brown College in Toronto. McGee also had an illustrious career as a navy and air force pilot in the Canadian Forces and a tour as Base Commander of CFB Comox.
Apart from his committed service to the Institute, McGee also serves on a variety of civic, business, and educational bodies representing charities and community, provincial, national, and international interests. This has included serving as Secretary-Treasurer on the Pacific Autism Centre Society Board of Directors and Secretary-Treasurer of the Vancouver Board of Trade Board of Directors. Even in these roles, he has never missed an opportunity to advocate for JIBC.
In a message to JIBC staff announcing his retirement, McGee said, “I could not be more proud of you and your colleagues for the outstanding training, education, and applied research that JIBC is so well known for throughout BC, across Canada, and around the world. In the meantime, I look forward to working with you for the remaining months as we continue to advance the status and value of the Institute to the citizens of British Columbia.”
By January 2012, JIBC’s Board of Governors will have chosen a firm to conduct the search for a new President. Once the search firm has been announced, a rigorous presidential search process will begin.
