JIBC Welcomes New Director, Fire & Safety Division

Veteran Maple Ridge Fire Chief Starts October 7

NEWS RELEASE

Justice Institute of British Columbia is pleased to welcome Peter Grootendorst, Chief and 30 year veteran of the Maple Ridge Fire Department, as the new Director, Fire & Safety Division, effective October 7, 2013.

"I’m excited and honoured to tackle the challenge of coordinating and promoting fire and safety training for the Justice Institute throughout the Province of BC," he said.  "This puts me in a position to work towards reducing the risk of injury or death for all firefighters in the province, to provide leadership skills to Fire Service officers, and to shape the future of Fire Service in B.C."

“We’re excited to welcome Peter,” said Colleen Vaughan, Acting Dean, School of Public Safety and Security.  “With his longstanding history in the Fire Service, we’re anticipating that his expertise will ensure that our training keeps pace with the most urgent needs in the field.”

Grootendorst has been instrumental in the Maple Ridge Fire Department guiding it from its volunteer roots to the current modern business unit that it is and keeping pace with the growth of the community of Maple Ridge. In the last 30 years, he has been involved in almost every emergency situation in the District of Maple Ridge and has played an integral role in every major initiative. He started as a volunteer firefighter until being hired as the full-time training officer in 1989 and then advancing to Chief in 1998, sharing the chief duties with Dane Spence.

During the 2010 Winter Games, he was employed by the Office of the Fire Commissioner as a Fire Services Liaison to provide situational awareness in the Provincial Regional Operations Center in Surrey, B.C.

Grootendorst has a Master of Arts in Leadership from Royal Roads University. He has had a history that intersects with JIBC from the time he was an alumnus, and has shared his wealth of experience as an instructor within the Fire & Safety Division.

In addition to his education, Peter has been recognized with The Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal (Governor General of Canada) and the British Columbia Long Service Award (Provincial Fire Commissioner).
