Irving K. Barber One World International Scholarship
Funded by the Irving K Barber British Columbia Scholarship Society, this award was established to provide outstanding recent graduates of the Fire Fighting Technologies Certificate with an opportunity to broaden their understanding of the cultural aspects of serving communities through fire protection services. The scholarships will contribute to defray the costs of travelling abroad for a two week service-learning opportunity as well as the costs associated with pre-departure training and post-trip debriefing and consolidation.
As part of the scholarship, the recipients have to complete a post-deployment presentation. For more information, watch this year's recipients presentation as part of their final report, or watch their 6 minute video of the deployment in El Salvador.
The Scholarship will contribute $3,000.00 per candidate towards travelling abroad for two weeks. Recipients will be responsible for a $250 FRITA Program Fee and for purchasing medical travel insurance, both of which are conditional to accepting the Scholarship. Recipients will also be enrolled in two JIBC credit courses, Fire Service Instructor 1 and Fire Protection in the Global Community, at no cost before departing abroad. In 2018, the One World Scholars will be travelling and studying in El Salvador. The Scholarship program has also been facilitated in Panama and Belize in the past 9 years since the program started.
